Raster (bitmap)
jpg, png, gif, bmp, psd, tiff, heic, psb, camera raw
JPG (JPEG): JPG (or JPEG) stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. This image format known for compressing file size with lossy compression, making it ideal for web images and photos. It loses some quality with each save.

PNG: PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It is a lossless format that supports transparency. It’s widely used for images with sharp edges or where a transparent background is needed, like logos and icons.

GIF: GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It is an older format that supports animations and transparency but is limited to 256 colors. It’s often used for simple animations and low-color graphics.

BMP: BMP stands for Bitmap. Bitmap is an uncompressed image format, typically large in size, and widely supported but not efficient for web use due to its lack of compression.

PSD: PSD stands for Photoshop Document. It preserves all layers, text, and effects for easy editing. It’s commonly used for working with complex image files in Photoshop.

TIFF: TIFF stands for Tag Image File Format. Tiff is a high-quality, flexible format supporting both lossy and lossless compression. It's commonly used in professional photography and printing due to its superior quality.

HEIC (HEIF): HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is a newer format that offers better compression than JPG without losing image quality. It's commonly used in modern smartphones like Apple devices.

PSB: PSB stands for Photoshop Big. PSB is a large-file version of the PSD format, designed to handle files over 2GB. Used in Photoshop for very high-resolution or large projects.

Camera Raw: Camera raw is a format used by cameras to store unprocessed image data. It retains all the data captured by the camera sensor, giving photographers more control in post-processing.

2. Photopea
Photopea is a free, web-based image editor that works similarly to Photoshop. It’s accessible in a browser and supports PSD files, making it a good alternative for users who need Photoshop-like tools without the cost.
3. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)
GIMP is a free, open-source image editor that offers many of the same tools as Photoshop. It’s great for photo editing and graphic design, and it can be customized with plugins.
4. Procreate
Procreate is a digital painting app for the iPad, designed for artists. It’s known for its natural drawing experience and powerful tools for creating digital art and illustrations.
Vector
Vector images use lines and points, which are usually used for logos, fonts, illustrations, etc.
Ai: Ai stands for Adobe Illustrator. It is a file type that results from exporting image files from Adobe Illustrator. It is used for icons, posters, logos, etc.
Indd: Indd stands for InDesign Document. This is the file type that is created when you export an image from InDesign. This is used for print and digital layouts.
Eps: Eps stands for Encapsulated PostScript. It's a file type used for high-quality printing.
Pdf: Pdf stands for Portable Document Format. It's a file type that is used to share documents.
Svg: Svg stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. It's a file type that is used for websites and apps.
Alt: Alt stands for Adobe Illustrator Template. It's a file type that is used for a template when using Illustrator.
Vector Image Editors
Adobe illustrator (ai): Adobe Illustrator is a vector image editor that is used to create printed and digital graphics such as icons, logos, etc.
Adobe photoshop (psd): Adobe Photoshop is a powerful and most popular image editor used by professionals for tasks like photo editing, graphic design, and digital art.
Coreldraw (cdr): Coreldraw is a vector graphics editor and graphics design suite, offering tools for illustration, layout, photo editing, and typography
Adobe animate (fla): Adobe Animate is a program that allows you to create animations with vectors
Layout
Indd: Indd stands for InDesign Document. This is the file type that is created when you export an image from InDesign.
Idml: Idml stands for InDesign Markup Language. This file type is for InDesign documents that are in XML format (Extensible Markup Language), which store layout information.
Layout Editors
Adobe InDesign (indd): Adobe InDesign is a program that creates digital layouts for print, posters, etc.
Adobe illustrator (ai): Adobe Illustrator is a vector image editor that is used to create printed and digital graphics such as icons, logos, etc.
